How to shorten and lengthen split reins Do you ride with split reins? When riding two-handed with split reins, it can sometimes be difficult to shorten and lengthen your reins. To shorten the reins simply drop the tail so you have one in each hand, and bring your hands close together. As you spread your hands back across along the bridge, your reins will shorten.
