This adorable duo is a pair of western spadefoot toads I photographed at Corral Hollow in Livermore, California. Found in California and northern Baja California, this species is nocturnal and secretive. Using spade-like projections on their hind legs to dig in sandy soil, these toads will spend most of their time buried in the ground, emerging during periods of summer rainfall to feed and breed.
